Have you ever gone on a God Hunt? A God Hunt begins when you teach yourself to look for God’s hand at work in the everyday occurrences of your life. Here’s one of my personal God Hunt Sightings:
This little story came my way via a friend. I think it has particular application in my life. It is taken from a meditation by John Bevere titled “The Grace in Us.” The Scripture that the author is using is from Ephesians 3:20,“Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power [grace] that works in us…”
Bevere tells the story about a severe famine that hits a certain part of the world. A generous and compassionate relief effort is established, and a large country sends its military to overlook the offloading of supplies and food from barges and cargo planes. Piles of fresh vegetables, fruits, grains and meats are made available along with fresh, uncontaminated water.
The military general in charge releases a statement to the population: “We are able to give as much food as you can carry away.”
The first man in line comes with a large sack and carries away a couple days’ supply of food for two people. The guy next in line comes with a larger sack and takes away enough food to feed his family for five days. However, the third man backs in a huge pickup truck and drives off with enough food to last his family and several hungry neighbors for the next month.
Imagine the feeling of the fellows with the full sacks on their backs. They see the pickup truck going past with more than a ton of food in its bed. They whine and complain, “That guy is taking more than his share!”
The general hears of this and explains, “Hey! We told you we were able to give you as much food and supplies as you can carry away. Why did you come with such a small container? Why didn’t you bring something larger? Why didn’t you borrow a pickup truck or a U-Haul and fill it with as much as you could?”
I think I am guilty of being too much like the first or second guy. Somehow I feel selfish, hesitant or undeserving about believing that God wants to “fill my truck.” Perhaps this has something to do with being an eldest child, the mother of children, the pastor’s wife in a church, or a grandmother—all my life I’ve always been looking out for the other guy.
In addition, one of my prevailing sins is envy, so I try to rejoice when good things happen in abundance for other people. However, I may have carried my attitudes of only asking for what I need way too far. How large is my container? Scripture reports that God is saying to us, “My grace [power] in you can go far beyond any container you bring.”
I am suspecting this is a journey into growth I need to be taking into the New Year, 2013. Can I learn to live believing in Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in me? We’ll see. We’ll see.
I spy God!
